Join us for REChEC's first meeting!

The Radical Early Childhood Education Collective (REChEC) is a gathering of people who work with young children (kindergarten and under) and are interested in the ways that social justice education and radical politics influence how we teach and engage with both children and the other adults in their lives.

Four of us (a school administrator, a librarian, and two preschool teachers) decided to get together after observing the ways that early childhood educators are underrepresented in conversations and actions around radical education. We hope to provide a space for skill-sharing, support, discussion, and implementation, and since the organization is in the earliest stages of development it is open to a wide variety of directions and visions.

The first official meeting will be on Thursday, January 23rd from 6:30-8:00 at Montessori Day School of Brooklyn (237 Park Place, just off of Vanderbilt Avenue in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn). Anyone who considers themselves an early-childhood educator is welcome, including babysitters, after-school teachers, classroom teachers, administrators, and graduate students. We do not have a particular litmus test for “radical” or “social justice,” but hopefully we will share a commitment to anti-oppressive education in its myriad and intersecting forms.

You are welcome to bring dinner/snacks, and there are many restaurants and bars nearby for those who want to continue discussions afterwards. Please RSVP using this form, and feel free to forward this to anyone you know who might be interested!

  1. Moved out of Brooklyn recently or would otherwise have attended, especially since I lived across the street! Saw the listing through a Bank Street alum email... would it be OK to post it on Facebook?

  3. Excellent! You might be interested in applying for a DEY's Action Mini-Grant to support your project. DEY is Defending the Early Years and we have a new Activist ToolKit including mini-grant application on our website. I invite you to check it out.
